Opening up the 2022 Ballymoney Teaching Weekend, David Gilliland looks at ‘The Supremacy of the Word” within John’s Gospel. The speaker begins by reading John 1:1-18, establishing the foundation for their discourse on the supremacy of the Word. They emphasise how John’s Gospel differs markedly from the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), describing it as mystical in nature compared to Matthew’s royal character, Mark’s practical approach, and Luke’s moral focus. David notes “a triangle of truth” in John Chapter 1, with the Logos at the centre and three key titles at the corners: Light, Lamb, and Ladder. David explains that Jesus, as the Light reveals and dispels darkness, as the Lamb redeems from sin’s dominion, and as the Ladder reconnects heaven and earth, bridging the gap created by sin.  David identifies four characteristics of God’s Word in Hebrew Scripture: it was a coming word, a creative word, a curative word, and a constructive word. David concludes by examining the usage of the “Word” title across John’s three biblical books. In the Gospel, Christ is presented as the expressive Word, fully communicating everything God intends to reveal. In John’s Epistle, Christ appears as the effective Word, creating a spiritual family and enabling fellowship with the Father. In Revelation 19, He is portrayed as the executive Word, wielding ultimate authority to judge evil and establish God’s kingdom.
